West Coast Queen of Coffee Hails From Southern California

Coffee Klatch Barista Wins 3rd Straight Western Barista Championship. Heather Perry of Coffee Klatch Roasting in San Dimas, California, wins the Western Regional Barista Championship for the third straight year, clearly demonstrating herself to be Best Barista on the West Coast.

This year’s competition was held in Petaluma, California, March 4 and 5, 2006. The competition featured the Top Baristi from all of California and Hawaii.Heather is the 2003 United States Barista Champion and the two-time time defending Western Regional Champion. Heather will next represent Coffee Klatch, and the Western Region, in the United States Championships at Charlotte, North Carolina next month.

According to Heather, the key to her success was an espresso blend featuring Coffee Klatch’s ‘Belle Kara’ Natural Yirgachefe. From the ‘Best of Ethiopia’ auction, this was far and away the best coffee in the auction. Heather described the coffee as naturally sweet and fruity, providing some of the citrus notes you would expect from a washed Yirgachefe, but also apricot, blueberry and chocolate notes you might not expect.

Barista’s are the coffee bartenders who serve up your latte, cappuccino, and specialty coffee drinks at your favorite coffee bar. During the competition, each Baristi prepares 4 espresso, 4 cappuccino, and 4 specialty drinks for a panel of judges from around the United States.

For her “Signature Drink”, Heather melted whipped honey and orange zest into a fondue pot. She then folded in whipping cream, scooped the mixture into a rosemary spritzed mini martini glass, and ran a perfect shot of the Belle Kara Espresso into the heart of the drink. The result was another victory for Heather.

The Coffee Klatch has been a local roaster and retailer of gourmet specialty coffee since 1993. They have been honored with many local and international awards for their coffee and business.
