Coffee Fest Hong Kong |
This week I am off to Hong Kong for Coffee Fest. It will be quite an adventure, as I will be both emceeing the latte art competition as well teaching the latte art classes. I just got the list of competitors today and will definitely be working on the pronunciation before I go and even more once I get there. I'm really excited to see what the competitors decide to pour. |

This past weekend we celebrated being in business for 15 years. We had 2 parties, one at our San Dimas store and one at our Flagship Rancho Cucamonga Store. The parties had it all from live entertainment and cake to free espresso and machiattos all night. People just couldn't get enough. We also had give aways and raffles. |

Cupping at Goodwin's Organics "Espresso Revolutionaries and Coffee Enthusiasts" . The following is a blog post by member John Dodson of a cupping by our own Green Coffee Buyer Mike Perry at Goodwin's Organics in Riverside, CA last week. Posted in Uncategorized on August 1, 2008 by mynamesjd As I sit here drinking my cup of delicious Klatch coffee I often wonder about the things of this world. I wonder how the Sistine Chapel was painted and why people freely choose not to eat meat. But I digress, for this blog post is not about the things I deem fit but about the wonderful coffee we all got to share last Wednesday and our spectacular host that evening. So let’s delve into the coffee world for a spill… |

Third Leg - Panama |
Cupping in Panama For those who have been with us for a while, you know I love coffee from Panama. Last year we were part of a US Group of Roasters who set a world record price of $130 / lb. for the famous Geisha Varietal from the Peterson Family's Esmeralda. This year started with a visit to top winning farms Bambito and Carmen Estate. They are located on the Volcan side of Panama. While in the US we have the Hatfield's and McCoy's, Panama has the Volcan's vs Boquette's. Someday I will have to tell the story of a fight that almost broke out at the Best of Panama cupping I judged in 2007. |

Why I Travel To Origin, Part 2 - Guatemala and Costa Rica |
Cerro Paldo Slopes Next on the same trip we met up with Ricky Herrera and traveled through Guatemala. Ricky is the Central American connection for many small farmers. The trip in Guatemala was one of Research and Exploration. While we traveled to many areas, we settled in the historic city of Antigua. For those who have never been to Antigua or seen the pictures, it is a colonial town from the past. Each square block is like a fort. From the outside it is all walls and bland, but inside a beautiful oasis appears. Enough on the city, let's talk about the coffee. |

Why I Travel To Origin, Part 1 - El Salvador |
Las Mercedes Family Many times people ask me why I travel to origin. Well, let me tell you about a recent trip to Central America earlier this year. The trip started in El Salvador where my friend Jeff Taylor and I met Aida and Jose Antonio from Jasal. We visited many farms and cupped much coffee; one farm was Finca Santa Rita. This farm was covered with volcanic ash from the great eruption a few years ago that destroyed that crop, the ash looked like snow three feet deep and covering everything. Today the minerals from that eruption have created a juicy and flavorful cherry that Aida processed naturally for us to create a truly outstanding coffee we will have this summer. |

From the cupping room: Brazils |
At the same time we were cupping the Ethiopian Coffee, we were also cupping coffee from Brazil. Over the course of three months we probaby cupped 40 different Brazils for both Espresso Blends, Single Origin Espresso, and as drip. During our testing we found the Poco Fundo Fair Trade Organic coffee which we used in our Wests Best Spro . This bean featured a slight fruitiness that we enjoyed as espresso and helped us earn the award for Best Espresso at the Western Regional Barista Championships in Berkeley, CA. But we don't settle on our laurels, so we continued experimenting and went back to our Brazil Yellow Bourbon - Fazenda Cachoeira for our US 08 Comp Blend .

Copenhagen |
I just recently got back from Copenhagen and the World Barista Championship and what an amazing experience. For the first time I went to a competition not as a competitor, but as a coach. I'm used to dealing with the pressure of being competitor, but I never realized the pressure my team felt. I had the pleasure of coaching the barista champion from Honduras, Ana Lucia. This was Honduras' first time being represented in the WBC and we were thrilled to go home with fifteenth. This was higher than any other Latin America country and we had less than a month to practice so this competition was a huge success for us. |

From the cupping room: Ethiopians |
For a quick review from the cupping room, I would like to highlight a few coffees from earlier this year before talking about what we are doing today. The year started out with a couple new (but limited supply) Ethiopian Naturals. Our initial goal with these Ethiopians was to find new coffee we might use in our competition espresso for the season. We got samples from everywhere and the best was a great Natural Coffee from the Aricha locality in the Yiracheffe region of Ethiopian: Aricha 2 .
